Abstract
The incidence of colorectal cancer has been increased recently in Korea.
This study was carried out in an effort to evaluate the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors in colorectal carcinoma. Authors reviewed 1028 cases of histologically proved and surgically treated adenocarcinoma from January, 1971 to
December,
1988 at Yonsei Medical Center.
@ES Results were as follows ;
@EN 1) The number of patients per year during the first 10 year period from 1971 to 1980 was under 50, but increased significantly after then, rose to over 100 from 1984.
2) The peak incidence was in the age group of sixth and seventh decades with 532(51.3%) and male to female ratio was 1.2 : 1.
3) According to the location of tumor, the rectum was most common(52.6%).
4) The distribution according to Astler-Coller modification of Dukes' classification was as follows:
A: 0.9% B: 50.2% C: 33.9% Undetermined: 1.2%
5) The resectability of primary lesion was 989.8% and abdominoperineal resection was the most frequent type of operation(29.2%).
6) The overall five year survival rate was 53.3%, with 56.2% in colon cancer and 50.9% in rectal cancer.
7) Five year survival rates for Astler-Coller's modified Dukes'A B1, B2, C1, C2, and D were 100%, 71.5%, 69.3%, 50.3%, and 6.7% respectively.
8) There were no significant differences in survival rate according to age, sex and duration of symptoms.
9) Stage, number of lymph nodes metastasis, degree of differentiation, preoperative CEA level were important indicators of prognosis.
10) Postoperative radiotherapy as an adjuvant for advanced rectal cancer had no effect on survival
